The importance of Gutter Cleaning

Why Clean out your Gutters?

We all love hanging out at home.  Most of the time, we take advantage of our homes.  Appreciating that everything works and functions the way that it is supposed to.  It is always a surprise when something happens that we just do not have time for.

Regular maintenance helps make our homes easy to deal with.  Getting a ladder our a cleaning out our gutters a couple of times a year helps the water flow off of our homes the way that it should.  If the gutters get clogged up, then the water backs up the roof, which causes the roof to leak and it all goes downhill from there.  Water pools in the attics, then down the drywall. Paint starts to peal, and so many other property damage problems can happen.

Cleaning out the gutters also prevents water from pooling in the gutters themselves.  Over time, if gutters are not cleaned out, then they can begin to rust through, causing the gutters to not work.  This also becomes an eyesore on the home.

There are many professionals who will come out and clean out the gutters.  They can identify problems too.  The gutters need to slope in the direction of downward water flow too.  Placing a level on the bottom of the gutter will help you determine if this is one of your problems, if your gutters are not working properly.

If you can, set a schedule of cleaning out your gutters in the spring and the fall.  Clean out all debris, leaves, sticks, gravel, even trash that has been blown in from the wind.  This will help you keep you from replacing your gutters sooner than you need.

Thermal Fractured Shingles

Thermal Fractured Shingles

Thermal fractured shingles are cracked shingles that are the result of warm shingles being exposed to cold rain showers.  This is a similar reaction of a small rock chip in your car windshield and the warm defroster causes it to expand or contract too fast, then you end up with a cracked windshield.

This occurs a lot in the Mountain West where we have extreme weather.  Hot summer days turn into a snowy afternoon in less than 24 hours.

Typically, this does not happen to roofs that do not need replacement.  This is a good sign to check with your local roofer.  They can help you decide what is the best plan of action when this occurs.

Using plastic roof vents also has a toll from weather.  The heating and cooling of our dramatic weather causes the plastic to become brittle quickly.

It is a good idea to make sure that you are getting steel or aluminum vents when you are replacing your roof.
